Connecting Climate Action and Commons: Policy Pathways, Opportunities, and Challenges

This session focused on climate change from a policy perspective, with an emphasis on climate actions, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and the management of commons within this context. By integrating interdisciplinary perspectives on the commons, the discussion aimed to enrich the climate discourse, especially as action agendas and financing strategies gain prominence both globally and locally. The session brought together key stakeholders to explore these intersections within the Indian context. The goal was to highlight how these issues can be prioritized in policy-making, practice, academic research, and corporate governance agendas.

 

Session on Community Stewardship and Indigenous knowledge: The way around

This session explored strategies to enhance community stewardship around conservation/restoration initiative including that round Nature based Projects and expanding PES Market. It brought forth challenges in recognizing and legally supporting community-led efforts, and examine how governments, civil society, and markets can better support these initiatives. The highlighted successful models of integrating community stewardship into policies and market systems as well as barriers and opportunities. A key takeaway was developing actionable strategies around centre-staging  elements of care, intrinsic traditional ecological knowledge and local agency (governance) into conservation/restoration investments and climate action.

Financing Innovations for Landscape Climate Action: Lessons, Leverage Points, and Challenges

This session explored innovative solutions for enhancing climate finance in community-driven projects, exploring successes and challenges. We discussed how effective governance structures can better integrate traditional knowledge, ensuring that climate finance supports ecological goals and community needs. The session aimed to identify actionable strategies to bridge the gap between financial mechanisms and on-the-ground realities, empowering communities and driving more equitable climate finance for commons in India.

Reimagining Wastelands as Commons: Evolving Discourse, Transitions, Implications

The session aimed to explore the narratives and perceptions around wastelands and trigger deliberations around their re-imagination as commons. As a way forward, the session attempted to see if the wastelands can provide win-win solutions for economy, conservation, and community needs.
